Eastern Cape mass shooting: 18 victims identified

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has identified the 18 victims who were brutally murdered in a mass shooting in Ngobozana village in Lusikisiki, Eastern Cape.

Two homesteads in the same street were targeted in the early hours on Saturday, 28 September, leaving 17 people dead. An 18th victim, who was in a critical condition has also passed away in hospital.

EASTERN CAPE MASS SHOOTING VICTIMS IDENTIFIED

According to the police, the victims were preparing for a traditional ritual to mark the end of mourning for a mother and daughter who were also murdered a year ago.

In the first homestead, four people were shot and killed, with no survivors. In the second homestead, there were 19 people in two different houses in the same yard. Thirteen people were shot and killed,” police said.

In total 15 women and two men were killed.

Fortunately, five people, including a two-month-old baby, survived the attack.

SAPS TOP BRASS TO VISIT BEREAVED FAMILIES

Meanwhile, police minister Senzo Mchunu, his two deputies Cassel Mathale and Polly Boshielo, as well as the national police commissioner General Fannie Masemola will visit the families of the 18 victims on Tuesday, 1 October.

Following the visit, the ministry and the national commissioner will address the community to discuss this devastating incident and provide information on the measures being taken to ensure the safety of the area and bring the perpetrators to justice.
