Eight-hour water supply maintenance to affect parts of Johannesburg

On Monday, 7 October, parts of Soweto will experience an eight-hour shutdown as Johannesburg Water teams will be doing repairs to infrastructure.

The maintenance is scheduled to start from 8:00 – 16:00.

JOHANNESBURG WATER SUPPLY MAINTENANCE

Johannesburg Water said its teams will be doing repairs on a 700mm burst pipe at Diepkloof zone, nearest corner Mhlanga Street and Marthinus Street, Diepkloof hostel and Diepkloof zone 4 and 6.

There will be no water during the maintenance, and there is no finite decision yet on alternative supply.

As a result, all the streets in the following suburbs will be affected:

  • Orlando East
  • Orlando West
  • Diepkloof extension
  • Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital

RAND WATER’S 56-HOUR SUPPLY INTERRUPTION BEGINS ON THURSDAY

Rand Water will embark on a 56-hour project to redirect a pipe, to allow City Power to expand its Mondeor Substation in Johannesburg.

In a statement, the utility said the disruption would begin on Thursday, 10 October, and end on Saturday, 12 October.

Rand Water will be diverting a G20 pipeline to allow for City Power’s construction of a power line for their Mondeor Substation.

The 56-hour disruption will allow City Power to establish an alternative power supply from the Mondeor Substation to Rand Water’s Eikenhof Pumping Station.

“A section of the bulk supplier’s G20 pipeline will be re-routed to tie into a recently diverted 900mm main at Mondeor Substation,” the utility said.

Meanwhile, Rand Water CEO Sipho Mosai revealed some of the challenges the entity is facing including high water consumption and illegal mining and connections during an imbizo held in September.

Mosai called for the imposition of level 1 restrictions and a moratorium on irrigating public facilities in the province until March 2025.

Under level 1 water restrictions, the watering of gardens is prohibited between 6:00 and 18:00. This has been the case for most residents especially in Johannesburg for quite some time. Residents are no longer permitted to wash paved areas and driveways using hosepipes.
