According to an X post by the Ministry of Finance (MOF), an elderly man had the shock of his life when he discovered that he had unclaimed money worth RM18,000 from the government.
They wrote, “An elderly person did not expect that the unclaimed money in his name would amount to RM18,000 when he visited the MOF booth at the PMR (Program MADANI Rakyat) Miri, Sarawak, this morning (September 29).”
“The man, who hails from Miri, came to utilise the various services at PMR, which is currently taking place at Boulevard Mall, Miri, and had time to stop at the MOF counter which, among other things, provides direct services to the people.”
Now that he has claimed his RM18,000, the money will be credited directly into his bank account within 30 days, after the Malaysian Accountant General’s Department receives the complete documents.
What is unclaimed money?
According to the Malaysian Accountant General’s Department, unclaimed money can come in the form of:
- Salaries, wages, bonuses, commissions and other payments due to employees
- Dividend
- Profits declared for distributions
- Insurance claims which have been approved for payment
- Bank drafts, cashier’s orders and other documents of a similar nature with a lapsed validity period
- Fixed deposits (without automatic renewal instructions) which have matured
- Tender deposits for which the intended purpose has been fulfilled
- Sundry creditors or sundry debtors with a credit balance
