Ellen DeGeneres got honest in her latest stand-up special on Netflix, ‘For Your Approval.’
It has been four years since Ellen DeGeneres left her talk show.
However, the former talk show host became candid and told the audience that she is proud of herself and how she has evolved in the past four years.
Ellen DeGeneres said,
“When you’re a public figure, you’re open to everyone’s interpretation. And I’m sure you’ve heard the saying, ‘What other people think of me is none of my business.’ Because people will say all kinds of things, and you have no control over that. But you know the truth, and that’s all that matters.”
Ellen DeGeneres also stated that she has devoted her entire life to making people happy and has given much importance to what people say about her.
She also lamented the fact that she was unceremoniously kicked out of show business for supposedly being ‘mean’ and letting the ‘mean’ label consume her.
She further added,
“If they like you, you’re in, and if they don’t, you’re out. And I’ve spent an entire lifetime trying to make people happy, and I’ve cared far too much about what other people think of me. So, the thought of anyone thinking that I’m mean was devastating to me, and it consumed me for a long time.”
The comedian got into a huge controversy after employees of her talk show, which ran for an incredible 19 seasons from 2003 to 2022, accused her of getting the task done by intimidation, racism, and fear.
The scandal culminated with the firing of three top producers on the show. The incident happened in 2020 when a group of employees accused her of being mean and cultivating a toxic environment on the sets.
The staff also accused her of penalizing employees for taking medical leave, citing examples of racial aggression and fear of reprisal for raising complaints.
The complaints were made by her employees anonymously and were published in a July 2020 BuzzFeed News report.
