‘Forget rankings, we are by far the no. 1 team’ – Springbok legend Victor Matfield

Springbok legend Victor Matfield says the Boks are the best team in the world despite the IRB World Ranking placing them second.

The Springboks wre replaced by Ireland as the number one rugby team in the world in September. Despite beating Argentina to claim the Castle Lager Championship, the 2023 Rugby World Cup champions remained in second behind the Irish.

According to SA Rugby Magazine, the former Boks lock said to Sunday newspaper Rapport South Africa were still the best team in the world.

“From a team perspective, the Boks may not be No 1 in World Rugby’s ranking, but for me we are,” Matfield argued.

“Rugby is about winning those big games and trophies, and we do that.

“We have won all the trophies and cups we play for in the past few years. In my opinion, we are by far the no. 1 team and I don’t think anyone can compete for that spot,” said Victor Matfield.

“Those in the northern hemisphere can say what they want, but the Webb Ellis Cup is here, the Springboks have won the most Tests this season and no other team has beaten the All Blacks four times in a row,” he said.

For close to a decade, Victor Matfield was the Springbok’ most-capped player ever. His record was broken last weekend by Eben Etzebeth. The Springboks are next in action next month as they take on Wales, Scotland and England.

Is Matfield spot on regarding Boks as the best team?
