Erika Diarte-Carr, the gutsy woman and her heart-wrenching battle against terminal cancer have caught the attention of everyone.
Erika is a mother of two kids, Jeremiah, 7, and Aaliyah, 5.
When she went for what was to be a simple shoulder surgery, her doctor informed her that she had multiple tumours which had metastasized throughout her body, including her skeletal system.
Worse, she was also diagnosed with Cushing syndrome, a rare hormonal condition which further aggravated her health and she was diagnosed with Stage 4 small-cell lung carcinoma (SCLC) on May 7, 2022, just one day before Mother’s Day.
Her doctors broke the grim news that she had just three months to live.
Community Support For Erika Diarte-Carr GoFundMe Campaign
The GoFundMe campaign was to raise just $5,000 to cover Erika’s funeral expenses. However she received overwhelming community support and the campaign managed to raise $1,098,705.
Erika Diarte-Carr has thanked the overwhelming support from the community and has now decided to raise a trust with the money so that her kid’s future is secure.
Erika had to endure a lot of pain and discomfort as her cancer metastasized.
Her weight increased by 60 pounds due to Cushing syndrome and she also developed hypertension, Type 2 Diabetes and her bones and muscles steadily degraded until she was unable to walk without aid.
Erika Diarte-Carr kept up her full-time employment as long as she could and took only two months off for check-ups, surgeries, biopsies, and treatments including chemotherapy and radiation.
However, her condition kept deteriorating and in September she decided to stop receiving therapy.
Erika is spending most of her time with her kids and wants to utilize the remaining moments without the stress of medical procedures.
The family is also planning to have another Christmas together and is organizing a camping trip.
Erika Diarte-Carr also thanked the doctors and the medical staff from the Ogden medical team for their care and conveyed her thankfulness for the public’s amazing support.
The money which has been collected will be used for her funeral and the remaining funds will be deposited into a trust account for her kids.
