This festival of Indian culture, which is very popularly known as Dussehra, is celebrated each year on the Dashami Tithi of Shukla Paksha of Ashwin month. The historical as well as religious significations of this festival are very deep, as it is celebrated as the victory of good over evil and truth over untruth. This day, Lord Shri Ram killed Ravana and conquered Lanka and Goddess Durga killed the demon named Mahishasura and freed the gods from trouble. That is why it is celebrated as Vijayadashami which in Sanskrit means “the tenth day of victory”.
The festival of Vijayadashami is associated with two great stories in Indian religion and culture. It’s the story related to Ramayana, where Lord Shri Ram killed Lankapati Ravana and freed Mother Sita. Ravana was a very powerful person, who, with many boons, had become a symbol of unrighteousness and arrogance. With the killing of Ravana, Shri Ram not only re-established Dharma but gave the message of fighting against evil and tyranny.
The second story is that of Goddess Durga and Mahishasura. A demon named Mahishasura killed a number of gods after which he took over heaven by defeating the gods. Then after much prayer, Mother Durga fought with Mahishasura for 9 days and defeated him. Based on this story, Vijayadashami is also considered to be a celebration of the glory of Goddess Durga.
Dussehra is not only a religiously important day; it even holds great importance socially and culturally. This festival narrates the story of the demolition of evil and the triumph of truth. It inspires that no matter what kind of circumstances develop in one’s life, ultimately truth and religions win.
Besides, Dussehra is an Abujh Muhurta. In other words, the beginning of any new work on this day is believed to be very auspicious. People begin new business, buy vehicles, and engage in auspicious activities on this day.
In the year 2024, Dussehra will take place on October 12. According to Panchang, Dashami Tithi will start at 10:58 am on 12th October 2024 and end at 09:08 am on 13th October 2024. During that period, the most auspicious time for worship is on 12th October from 2:02 pm to 2:48 pm. People celebrate specific puja of Shastra Puja and Vijayadashami in this very time period.
Shravan Nakshatra and Sarvartha Siddhi Yoga will be there on Dussehra as well which makes the day even more auspicious. According to the mythology, Shravan Nakshatra and Sarvartha Siddhi Yoga is considered very good for religious and spiritual works.
The day of Dussehra is very special for the worship and rituals. On this day, people worship their weapons, which is known as Shastra Puja. This tradition gives us a message that weapons should be used to protect religion and justice, not for unrighteousness and injustice.
Shami tree is also worshipped on Dussehra day. The belief is that in the Mahabharata period, while Pandavas were in exile for a year, they had hidden their arms in the Shami tree and used to fetch it from this tree at the end of one year. So, on this day, one must worship Shami tree and gain victory.
