Magesi FC head coach Clinton Larsen has explained how his side knocked out Orlando Pirates in the Carling Knockout Cup.
The Limpopo side defeated the Buccaneers 3-2 this past Saturday at the Orlando Stadium. Speaking to Thabiso Mosia on Radio 2000, Larsen said a win was something special for the newly promoted club.
Larsen talks about his sweet victory over Orlando Pirates
“I think it’s a historic moment for Magesi FC. The first-ever meeting between Magesi and the giants of South African football in Orlando Pirates you know, so to come out with a victory is something special for the club. The win will do a lot for our confidence going forward into the next games,” he said.
Magesi were 3-0 up at half-time and had to defend with everything to keep the Buccaneers at bay,
In the second half, you could see the level between our team and Orlando Pirates,” Larsen added. “We are very far off the levels of the Sundowns, the Pirates, and the Stellenbosches of this world. So we know we have a lot of work ahead of us to improve as a team and football club.”
Larsen said that his team had a solid game plan against the Sea Robbers. Before the match, Pirates had not lost this season, having won eight of their 10 matches across all competitions.
“We have our limitations and we know that. We know against certain teams, we will play a certain way and that was our approach against Orlando Pirates,” Larsen added.
The Buccaneers’ unbeaten run ended against Magesi
“We knew that we had to stay resolute, stay compact, and play on the break. We knew we would only 35 to 40 percent of the ball but what we did with the possession was key. I am very happy that what we did in training was well executed,” he said.
When asked if he knew his side would score three against Orlando Pirates, Larsen gave a brave answer.
“Yes I did, and people might think I’m crazy to think that way. I did it before at (Bloemfontein)Celtic against Sundowns. It was a similar approach. Everytime we went forward, we looked dangerous and we could have scored four or five goals,” he said.
