It is observed on the very first day of October every year. International Music Day celebrates the power of music which unites people while making peace and harmony possible among different cultures and communities. In fact, International Music Day has actually been declared from 1975 by the International Music Council. The organization was set up in 1949 under the aegis of UNESCO, which at the time of its founding had believed that peace and unity in the world could be promoted through music.
The event was solely aimed to sensitize people toward music and inspire them to adopt the concepts of peace and friendship through it. It was highly advocated by the then chairman of IMC, Lord Yehudi Menuhin, a great violinist and composer. According to Menuhin, music has the power to make people closer to each other, and it brings a modification in society positively through cultural exchange.
Since 1975, this day is celebrated in more than 150 countries around the world. On this day, concerts, exhibitions, symposia and lectures are organised to hail the glory of music. This day is a special occasion for musicians as well as those who consider music as a part of life, wherein through it they can propagate peace and harmony among individuals in society.
Every year, there is a theme for International Music Day. 2024: The theme is “Harmony Across Cultures.” The theme this year emphasizes how music brings together different cultures into contributing to an even more harmonious world.
