Kaizer Chiefs coach urges swift Implementation of VAR, as he is frustrated over refereeing decisions.
Chiefs head coach Nasreddine Nabi has made a passionate appeal for the Premier Soccer League (PSL) to introduce Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology as soon as possible. Following a contentious 2-2 draw against Magesi FC, where his team salvaged a point thanks to two late goals from Mduduzi Shabalala, Nabi voiced his displeasure over the officiating.
In a post-match interview, Nabi stated, “Obviously we are very disappointed but we have to talk about how the officials are officiating the game,” as quoted by iDiski Times.
His remarks underline the urgency for better officiating standards in South Africa’s top league.
Chiefs call for VAR after key mistakes
Nabi pointed out two critical errors made by the match officials that significantly impacted the game’s outcome. “We believe that it’s more than time that VAR comes into this beautiful league, the PSL because we believe that there was a penalty on Duba, everyone is going to see the images,” he said.
He further criticised a controversial free-kick decision that led to Magesi’s second goal. “The second goal they scored it’s a free-kick for us but it becomes a free-kick for them.” Nabi emphasised the need for VAR, stating, “We don’t want to put pressure on anybody, we know the referees are human beings and make mistakes too. But we urge the body officials of the league to bring VAR to help the referees because we feel that we are being punished every game.”
Disappointment over draw against newly-promoted side
Despite the impressive comeback, Nabi expressed that a single point is not sufficient for a club with the stature of Kaizer Chiefs. He remarked, “Today, there is nothing positive that we are taking. Because we believe that we should’ve won the three points.” His disappointment reflects the high expectations that come with managing such a prestigious team.
The coach acknowledged the improved mentality of his players after coming back from a two-goal deficit, noting, “It’s true that we’ve come from two goals behind. Which shows improvement in mentality and character.” However, he insisted, “That was not enough because we believe we should’ve taken the three points today.”
Nabi concluded by stressing the importance of seizing opportunities and pushing for victory. “We need to do more in the beginning. We need to do more when we have this kind of opportunities,” he stated. Highlighting the urgency for Kaizer Chiefs to elevate their performance in upcoming matches.
