The 2014/15 season was the last time Kaizer Chiefs had Mamelodi Sundowns’ in their back pocket, edging them by eight points to lift the trophy.
Since then, Masandawana has been relentless, winning eight of the following nine Premier Soccer Leagues – a rare type of dominance only elite clubs like Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain eclipse.
This year, the Brazilians are gunning for eight titles in a row.
Following a disappointing 10th-placed finish last season, the Glamour Boys, under new coach Nasreddine Nabi, are looking to dethrone the reigning champions.
They’re off to a good start with two wins in three games and a dominant 4-0 display over SuperSport United in the Telkom Cup.
The two sides have already met, with Sundowns’ winning 2-1 in controversial style, but the beauty of the league is that they have to meet up again, and who knows what Nabi’s side will be capable of.
Who’s the mystery target?
Tanzanian playmaker Feisal Salum is on the top of Nabi and Manqoba Mngithi’s wishlists as both sides prepare bids for the January transfer window.
The Kaizer Chiefs manager knows Salum’s talents well, having coached him during his time at Young Africans S.C.
The smiley midfielder is the complete package, clocking 37 caps and three goals for his country, but will their old relationship be enough to persuade him to Soweto? Or will Salum want the best chance of glory and head to the Brazilians?
“There could be more changes in the playing staff at Chiefs in January. You know the Tanzanian midfielder that Mamelodi Sundowns have been following, Feisal Salum? Kaizer is now after him. Actually, the assistant coach Cedric Kaze is believed to have proposed him to the club as both he and Nabi know him from Yanga. He played under them before joining Azam and he feels there is a role he can play at the club hence his suggestion to the team. It’s just that at Chiefs for now when they are ready they will approach Azam. But there is that talk at the club now about Feisal Salum,” said an anonymous Soccer-Laduma source.
Do you think Salum will head to Kaizer Chiefs?
