Kaizer Chiefs transfer news latest, dishes up expert opinion on the signing of Asanele Velebayi.
The PSL transfer window closed on September 20, 2024, leaving Kaizer Chiefs fans seething over Velebayi not being able to leave Cape Town Spurs. The talented winger attracted significant interest from Chiefs, but negotiations broke down due to stark differences in valuation between the two clubs.
Chiefs’ Sporting Director firmly denied claims that the club directly approached Asanele Velebayi’s parents to discuss a potential deal for the 21-year-old winger.
Cape Town Spurs chairman Alexi Efstathiou expressed his discontent with Chiefs’ offers, stating they fell “significantly below Velebayi’s true value.” He emphasised the club’s considerable investment in Velebayi’s development and praised the winger’s exceptional talent on the field, making it clear why Spurs refused to budge on their asking price.
Velebayi’s talent shines despite relegation
Velebayi’s standout performances last season captured the attention of Chiefs. However, despite his efforts, Cape Town Spurs faced relegation back to the Motsepe Foundation Championship after just one season in the top flight, complicating the situation further.
Lance Davids, Velebayi’s agent, provided insights into the failed transfer during his appearance on Sports Night Amplified with Andile Ncube. “Chiefs put in an offer and the value was too low for Cape Town Spurs,” he explained. After a second, more competitive offer from Chiefs, Davids noted, “They thought that their valuation was low and then they stopped just there.”
Recruitment expert questions Asanele’s value
With the transfer collapse fresh in fans’ minds, we consulted an expert to evaluate whether this was the right move for Amakhosi. The recruitment genius based in Cape Town weighed in on whether Cape Town Spurs star Velebayi would fit into Kaizer Chiefs.
“Asanele’s potential is undeniable, but is he worth the investment for Kaizer Chiefs?” the expert asked The South African.
“With a high valuation and modest statistics (one goal and one assist in 23 PSL games). Does his potential outweigh his price tag? His value should be measured by output, not just potential.”
The expert further noted the pressures that come with being a Chiefs player: “Kaizer Chiefs’ passionate fans demand results. Big-money signings bring massive pressure. Asanele’s modest stats suggest he may not be ready for Chiefs’ expectations, making this signing premature.”
As the dust settles on the transfer window, Chiefs fans are left wondering what the future holds for their club. And whether they missed an opportunity to secure a rising star in Velebayi.
