Following a dominant 4-0 victory over SuperSport United in the Telkom Cup, Kaizer Chiefs look destined to challenge for silverware.
Under new management and seven new signings, they’ve transformed from a lacklustre side – that finished 10th last season – into a goal-getting, winning machine.
The Glamour Boys sit 6th on the log with two wins from three games.
Kaizer Chiefs transfer competition
It was a busy winter window for AmaKhosi who signed PSL veteran Gastón Sirino and Inacio Miguel; however, they failed to land several rising stars, namely Oswin Appollis and Asanele Velebayi.
Both are dream targets for the summer. However, interest has grown abroad, meaning the Soweto Giants will find it harder to put pen to paper.
Another player on their wish list is striker Michael Olunga. And with 190 goals in 253 games, it’s obvious why any club would want him. However, his R114 million price tag seems too heavy for Kaizer Chiefs following a hefty spending spree.
Update from Velebayi’s agent
Velebayi’s agent, Lance Davids, mentioned the negotiations that took place over July and august, saying, “So, of course, there was a lot of back and forth – Chiefs put in an offer, and the value was too low for Cape Town Spurs,
“Chiefs came back with a second offer and gave, in my opinion, a valuation that was very fair with add-ons, and they also didn’t accept that. They thought the valuation was low, and then they stopped just there.
“In my opinion, I thought the valuation that Cape Town Spurs was looking at for Velebayi, compared to Oswin Appollis, it’s a no-brainer – you can’t compare [the two players’ value]. At this point, what did Oswin achieved in the last year?
“So I think the valuation of Velebayi was crazy; I think Chiefs, to be honest, was very fair on their proposal and, in my opinion, they could have still add some more add-ons.
“Of course, they did not because they thought they were also fair on their proposal, and the deal fell through… I’ll be honest, at first Cape Town Spurs wanted R12 million, they came down to R10 million, and Chiefs’ offer was R5 million plus players.”
