Google has reinforced its dedication to Southeast Asia by breaking ground on its first data center and cloud region in Malaysia, following the investment announcement made in May 2024.
The US$2 billion (approximately RM8.3 billion) investment is a major step forward for the tech giant, showcasing its strong belief in Malaysia’s growing digital ecosystem.

According to W.Media, the data center, which will be located in Selangor’s Elmina Business Park, is expected to help grow the economy, create jobs, and spark innovation.
Google is looking to meet the growing demand for cloud services and AI, helping businesses and organisations in Malaysia achieve their digital goals.
On top of the economic perks, Google is also all in when it comes to supporting local communities and the environment.
They’re teaming up with the Global Environment Centre (GEC) and the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) to improve Taman Aman Lake, as part of their efforts to take care of local water resources.

Google will also be working with UNICEF Malaysia, CelcomDigi, the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation, and Arus Academy to bring the Future Skills for All program to Selangor, with help from the Ministry of Education.
This initiative aims to address inequalities and give everyone (especially kids from different backgrounds) a shot at learning important future skills.
Google has also announced a big investment of 36 billion Thai baht (approximately RM4.68 billion) in Thailand to set up a new data center and expand their cloud services.
