Mofokeng reaches 50 games—but could leave in January

At just 19, Relebohile Mofokeng has the world at his feet.

Orlando Pirates have uncovered another Sharpeville-native gem, but how long will it be before Europe comes knocking?

Mofokeng, who reached reached fifty club caps in the MTN8 final, was already turning heads two years ago when he entered the Buccaneers’ first team late into the 2022/23 season. This led to a trial with Wolverhampton Wanderers and interest from Spain’s Levante FC.

As his stock continues to rise, so does the number of clubs wanting his signature—soon, it may be too hard to say no.

European football will pique any African footballer’s interest. Being able to play on one of those iconic Champions League nights—lining up against the best in the world—is often enough to sway them from home.

January transfer window

Some teams will try their luck this January transfer window, but for now, Mofokeng has his heart in Soweto.

However, if the right deal came his way, he would certainly entertain the thought.

Following the Pirates MTN8 cup final success, during which Mofokeng assisted the go-ahead goal and then scored to put the nail in the coffin, he told The Star, “The only important thing is we work and get along well together, so I’ll be happy he stayed for an extended time. Staying with him is a good thing, he helps us with a lot of things. I’d love to stay with him for another season,

“Those who started are the ones who exhausted Stellenbosch so I can come in when things are much simpler. So, I come on to work, it’s not like they trust me off the bench because I have been starting other games, scoring, and assisting.

“But even from the bench, you have to be ready. And I want to thank my teammates for helping me score, Tshego (Tshegofatso Mabasa) is the one who assisted me.”

Do you think Mofokeng will stay and become a Pirates legend?
