‘Never forget is the Rothmans Cup robbery’ – Sundowns fans reminds Kaizer Chiefs

Mamelodi Sundowns fans defended match referee Sikhumbuzo Gasa following his controversial calls during the match between Masandawana and Kaizer Chiefs.

The referee disallowed Amakhosi’s last-minute goal after he called a foul on Sundowns defender Mosa Lebusa. Chiefs fans also felt that Iqraam Rayner’s goal should not have counted as he received a ball from Ribeiro, who some felt was in an offside position.

Sundowns fans defend officials against angry Chiefs fans

Kaizer Chiefs players, technical team and supporters were unhappy with how the officials handled the match. Many felt Gasa and his team were biased and benefitted the Tshwane giants on the day.

Some Downs fans took to X(formerly Twitter) to remind Khosi supporters about one of the most memorable football matches in SA football. The Sundowns fans took the Khosination back to memory lane where Kaizer Chiefs controversially won the 1998 Rothmans Cup final.

Joel Masilela’s goal was incorrectly disallowed.

After a 2-2 draw in 120 minutes of football, Amakhosi emerged 2-1 winners in the penalty shootout. Before the penalty shootout, Joel “Fire” Masilela scored a clear goal but it was incorrectly ruled out for office. At the time, Downs would have claimed the cup but officials decided otherwise.

For many Sundowns fans, the Rothman Cup loss to Kaizer Chiefs felt like it was orchestrated. In an interview he did with SowetanLive, Fire Masilela felt his Downs were robbed in the final and his goal should have been allowed.
