Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) has recently opened new flight routes and added extra flights to several of its airports as part of the country’s October Transport Month. Below are all the details of additional routes and flights.
Air connectivity key for economic and tourism relationships
Last month, the Airports Council International Africa (ACI Africa) Regional Conference focused on boosting connectivity by working together and collaborating. The main goal was to improve operations and promote sustainable growth in the African aviation industry.
In a news report by ACSA, it stated that by improving air links between African countries, stakeholders can promote intra-African trade, strengthen regional cooperation, and support the African Continental Free Trade Area.
“Our industry’s success hinges on our ability to work together, to innovate together, and to overcome obstacles together. Together, we can unlock the full potential of aviation in Africa, driving our industry towards a future of excellence, sustainability, resilience, and prosperity.”
Emanuel Chaves, President of ACI Africa
New flights: Africa
Air Botswana will launch its first flight between Gaborone, the capital of Botswana, and Durban on 11 October 2024. It will be a direct flight to King Shaka International Airport. The airline will operate three times a week on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays, as reported by capetownetc.
Furthermore, FlySafair will launch its first international route between Cape Town and Hosea Kutako International Airport in Windhoek, Namibia. It will offer two flights a week on Tuesdays and Saturdays. The first flight is scheduled to take off on 22 October.
From 5 November 2024, South African Airways (SAA) will add an additional two flights between Johannesburg and Harare per week.
Recently, Airlink launched daily flights between OR Tambo International Airport and Mozambique’s Beira International Airport. It also added another route from Johannesburg to Dares Salaam, Tanzania.
The airline has also been granted authorisation for a direct flight between Cape Town and Gaborone. This flight will commence on 1 April 2025.
Flights between South Africa and the UK
For the upcoming summer season (November 2024 to March 2025), British Airways is increasing their flight frequency between Cape Town International Airport and Heathrow Airport in London. This will increase the total weekly flights for the airline’s service to and from Heathrow Airport to 21, as reported by Business Tech.
It is important to note that this route will replace the carrier’s three-weekly seasonal service from London Gatwick Airport, which will now operate between 14 December 2024 and 8 January 2025.
However, more flights will be available between South Africa and the UK as Norse Atlantic, a Norwegian low-cost long-haul airline, will be launching flights between Cape Town and London from 28 October 2024, as previously reported by The South African. They will offer three flights each week – Monday, Wednesday, and also Saturday that will operate between London Gatwick Airport and Cape Town International Airport.
