The City of Cape Town has announced that bookings for the Steenbras River Gorge and Crystal Pools Hiking Trail will only open on Friday, 1 November 2024.
While bookings for the popular trail typically open from 1 October every season, a wet winter and unforeseen delays in ongoing repair work have seen that date pushed back by a month.
According to a City of Cape Town statement, high rainfall this past winter led to the water levels rising significantly across the Steenbras River Gorge and Crystal Pools Hiking Trail.
As a result, the Steenbras Nature Reserve team was able to assess parts of the trail in late September – and discovered that several sections of the trail had been damaged.
‘The in-house team has already started the necessary maintenance work on Friday, 27 September, and we are confident that the trail will be ready to open to the public by 1 November 2024,’ said the City in a statement.
‘This adjustment ensures that all sections of the trail are ready for public use when hiking resumes.’
