The South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (SANRAL) has issued a warning to road users about temporary closures of the N2 between Makhanda and Fish River Pass. The closures, set to occur due to scheduled blasting operations, will affect traffic flow on key dates in mid-October.
Key closure dates announced by SANRAL
According to SANRAL, the closures will take place on Monday, 14 October, Thursday, 17 October, and Monday, 21 October. Mbulelo Peterson, SANRAL’s Southern Region Manager, stated that the road would be closed from 15:00 until 18:00 on these days, allowing three hours for safe blasting and clearing.
“The road will be closed on these days from 15:00, for a maximum period of three hours up to 18:00, to allow sufficient time for the cleaning of the existing N2 and making it safe for the travelling public,” SANRAL announced.
The closures are essential to ensure safety while blasting operations take place. Peterson urged road users to plan ahead and take caution during this period. “Motorists are requested to plan their trips; accordingly, consider alternative routes and use caution when making use of the roads. We apologise for any inconvenience caused,” he said.
Suggested alternative routes
Motorists traveling westwards from East London or Qonce to Gqeberha are advised to use the R72 route via Port Alfred, Kenton-on-Sea, and Nanaga before rejoining the N2 towards Gqeberha. For those traveling eastwards from Gqeberha to East London, SANRAL has suggested the reverse route: follow the N2 to Nanaga, turn right onto the R72, and continue through Alexandria and Port Alfred.
Additionally, motorists can follow the N2 westwards through Qonce if departing from East London.
Safety first
SANRAL has emphasised the importance of these closures to ensure the safety of both workers and road users. The agency also reminded the public that the operation’s timing is designed to minimise disruption while keeping safety at the forefront.
Peterson also reassured road users that all necessary precautions would be taken to restore the road quickly.
With significant travel disruptions expected, how will you plan your journey during these closures?
