Springbok and Vodacom Bulls centre Lionel Mapoe has announced his retirement from rugby, calling time on a professional career that spanned nearly two decades.
It was confirmed on Tuesday that former Springboks utility back Lionel Mapoe has decided to draw the curtain on his 16-year professional career.
Mapoe’s career started at the Cheetahs in 2008, followed by significant stints with the Lions and Bulls. He played six matches for the Blitzboks in the abbrivated form of the game in 2009, before earning a Springbok call-up in 2015, nearly securing a spot in the World Cup squad that year.
The Springbok went on to play 14 Tests for South Africa between 2015 and 2018.

In a statement shared on his social media pages, Mapoe announced retirement plans, which were reportedly expedited to help him step into and focus on a his potential boxing career.
The 36-year-old will allegedly fight former teammate and close ally Elton Jantjies on 30 November.
“I want to express my heartfelt thanks to the entire Bulls family for the incredible time I had during my years at the union,” Mapoe stated on social media.
“Winning the Currie Cup in 2021 was a special moment in my career, and it wouldn’t have been possible without the amazing coaches, players, and staff I was fortunate to work alongside.”
“The relationships I built during my time there will stay with me for a lifetime. I’m deeply grateful for everything the Bulls have done for me, both on and off the field,” Mapoe added.
