Springbok star’s dad invaded Twickenham pitch and ambushed refs

Everyone’s favourite former heartthrob Springbok Bob Skinstad talks all things rugby on the latest episode of the Privileged Man podcast. Here’s the best bits to look forward to.

Having played 41 Test matches between 1997 and 2007, Bob Skinstad was and still is one of the most well-loved and recognisable Springboks South Africa has ever produced, one that enjoyed a cult-like following from all over the country.

His honours include and achievements in the game include:

  • SA Young Player of the Year nominee in 1997
  • Currie Cup winner with Western Province in 1997, 2000 and 2001
  • SA Player of the Year nominee in 1998
  • Tri-Nations winner in 1998
  • Member of the World Cup winning Springbok squad in 2007
  • Springbok captain on 12 occasions

These days, Skinstad resides in the United Kingdom with his family, but still keeps a keen eye on South African rugby from afar.

In the latest episode of the Privileged Man podcast, the Springbok great reveals how his most shocking moment as a rugby player involved his father nudged a referee out of the way to get to him on the field, he revels in the evolution of loose forwards between the he last played and admits the opponent he least liked to face back in the day.

BEST OF BOB SKINSTAD ON PRIVILEGED MAN PODCAST:

When asked by podcast host, Pete Hunt, for his most shocking moment during his playing days, Skinstad surprisingly opened up about how his father invaded the pitch at Twickenham to get to him after he suffered an injury.

“My dad was doctor and he actually ran onto the field when I was injured at Twickenham,” the Springbok revealed.

“He sidestepped the (security) wardens and volunteers, got past the touch judges and everybody and then nudged the ref out of the way to check that I was okay. I dislocated my shoulder.”

“I looked up and I sort of circle the people, including our team doctor, and then there was my dad’s face. That was definitely the most shocking. I was like ‘what on earth are you doing here’. But he basically came to check that I was okay. It was an amazing moment because of how freakish it was.”

“He got kicked out of the stadium for running onto the field of play and then talked his way back in. He told one of the nice ladies who was running the ticket booth that he ran on because his son had been injured and he wasn’t actually a naughty boy and she let him back in,” the Springbok explained.

Skinstad added that his father was actually escorted out before he was let back in: “I couldn’t worry about him. Two men in their big yellow jackets hauled him off and then kicked him out and said ‘get on with your day somewhere else’,” the Springbok joked.

The latest episode of the Privileged Man podcast featuring Bob Skinstad will air soon. To listen to the full conversion and all the Springbok’s insights, keep an eye on the official podcast website.
