Themba Zwane: Huge milestone awaits Bafana Bafana star

Mamelodi Sundowns attacking midfielder Themba Zwane is set for a huge milestone with Bafana Bafana.

With Bafana Bafana set to face Congo-Brazzaville in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, Zwane needs just one match to achieve the milestone.

Bafana Bafana host Congo-Brazzaville at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Friday, 11 October.

Kick-off is at 17:00.

Hugo Broos’ men will then travel to Congo-Brazaville to face the same opponents in the reverse fixture on 15 October.

THEMBA ZWANE SET FOR 50TH BAFANA BAFANA CAP

Now, Zwane is one match away from reaching 50 caps for Bafana Bafana, meaning he’s currently on 49.

Of course, the 35-year-old won’t be the first player to feature in 50 international matches for Bafana Bafana.

Former Bafana Bafana captain Aaron Mokoena remains the most capped player with 107 caps followed by Itumeleng Khune at 91.

What makes Zwane’s 50-match milestone interesting is the fact that he will equal the number of games Doctor Khumalo played for Bafana Bafana.

This is interesting in the sense that there is a continued debate on who is a better player between Zwane and Khumalo.

Khumalo played for Kaizer Chiefs for many years, and was also instrumental in helping Bafana Bafana win the 1996 AFCON title.

Zwane, on the other hand, has a bronze AFCON medal recently won with Bafana Bafana at the 2023 AFCON tournament.

Now, Zwane, in 49 Bafana Bafana matches, has scored 12 goals to date while Khumalo scored nine goals in his 50 international matches.

It is worth mentioning that these two players – Zwane and Khumalo – are/were not natural strikers.
