DOZENS of products containing mustard have been recalled due to allergy concerns.
Multiple brands are pulling sauces and pastes from UK supermarkets and takeaways because they have peanuts which are not mentioned on labels – after a Food Standards Agency alert.
A total of 136 products have been pulled from shelves[/caption]
Products include some made for Waitrose[/caption]
Iceland items are also impacted[/caption]
Papa Johns’s issued an urgent warning to customers about two of its dips[/caption]
Those impacted include products made by My Protein, Slimming World, Iceland and Waitrose.
While major pizza takeaway chain Papa John’s has been forced to stop serving its Garlic and Herb Dip, and their Vegan Ranch Dressing.
And Domino’s has removed its BBQ Dip and The Big Dip – BBQ.
NEW ITEM ADDED
The latest item to be added to the alert list yesterday is Merchant Gourmet’s Black Dhal with Black Lentils & Coconut Cream.
The FSA says: “Several brands are taking the precautionary step of recalling several spice products that contain mustard, because they may contain peanuts which are not mentioned on the label.
“This means the products are a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy to peanuts.”
The signs of an allergic reaction and anaphylaxis
SYMPTOMS of an allergy usually occur within minutes of contact with with the offending food or trigger, but they can also come on up to one hour later.
Most allergic reactions are mild but they can also be moderate or severe.
Anaphylaxis is the most severe form of allergic reaction which can be life threatening.
Mild to moderate symptoms include:
- Itchy mouth, tongue and throat
- Swelling of lips, around the eyes or face
- Red raised itchy rash (often called nettle rash, hives or urticaria)
- Vomiting, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhoea
- Runny nose and sneezing
Severe symptoms of anaphylaxis include:
- Swelling of your throat and tongue
- Difficulty breathing or breathing very fast
- Difficulty swallowing, tightness in your throat or a hoarse voice
- Wheezing, coughing or noisy breathing
- Feeling tired or confused
- Feeling faint, dizzy or fainting
- Skin that feels cold to the touch
- Blue, grey or pale skin, lips or tongue – if you have brown or black skin, this may be easier to see on the palms of your hands or soles of your feet
Anaphylaxis and its symptoms should be treated as a medical emergency.
Follow these steps if you think you or someone you’re with is having an anaphylactic reaction:
- Use an adrenaline auto-injector (such as an EpiPen) if you have one – instructions are included on the side of the injector.
- Call 999 for an ambulance and say that you think you’re having an anaphylactic reaction.
- Lie down – you can raise your legs, and if you’re struggling to breathe, raise your shoulders or sit up slowly (if you’re pregnant, lie on your left side).
- If you have been stung by an insect, try to remove the sting if it’s still in the skin.
- If your symptoms have not improved after 5 minutes, use a 2nd adrenaline auto-injector.
Do not stand or walk at any time, even if you feel better.

A spokesperson for the FSA said: “The FSA is urgently working with the relevant Local Authorities, individual businesses and industry to identify which products may be affected.
“We have traced the contaminated mustard ingredients to a producer in India called GT Agro Industries and have identified one company who has supplied these ingredients for use in UK food.
“There is no evidence other suppliers are affected so far.”
The UK company affected, FGS Ingredients Ltd, has urged customers to remove from sale products containing contaminated mustard ingredients.
FSA’s Director of Food Policy, Rebecca Sudworth, said: ”Those with a peanut allergy should avoid consuming products containing mustard as an ingredient until we identify the individual products affected.
“Parents and carers of children who have a peanut allergy should take care to check the labels of food they buy and, if eating out, or getting a takeaway, ask the restaurant or cafe about foods that might contain mustard.
“As soon as we have more information, we will update consumers. As always, we urge people with an allergy to sign up to our allergy alerts, so you can be notified about future allergy recalls.”
