Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has welcomed the Premier Soccer League(PSL) decision not to schedule matches this weekend.
Only Orlando Pirates and Stellenbosch are in action on Saturday in the MTN8 final. On Thursday, Broos named a strong 23-man squad that will face Congo Brazzaville in their upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) Qualifiers.
Bafana will first host Congo at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium next Friday before flying to Congo on 15 October. The team welcomes the return of captain and goalkeeper Ronwen Williams following a lengthy injury.
Hugo Broos thanks PSL for granting his request
Bafana will be without Percy Tau for the Afcon qualifiers. Due to personal issues, the 30-year-old Al Ahly striker has asked not to be selected in the squad.
Lyle Foster is expected to lead front with Iqraam Rayners. Speaking to the media, Hugo Broos revealed that the PSL permitted him to start camp early.
“I am very happy that the PSL agreed with my request,” he said.
“There is no competition; there is only the MTN8 Final. So only the players of [Orlando] Pirates and Stellenbosch FC are playing on Saturday. So, for me, that was the reason why I asked to start the camp on Saturday so that we can come together in camp on Saturday.”
“We fly to PE in the morning, and then we can train in the afternoon. So if we should have been together on Monday, we are wasting days. So we are very happy. Thank you [PSL] for agreeing to my request,” Hugo Broos said.
Can Bafana beat Congo home and away?
