White Maltesers: Why and when was the chocolate discontinued?

WHITE Maltesers were launched in 2003 and was enjoyed until 2014 .

The fan favourite brand was owned by Mars, but not long after it was discontinued, fans hoped the White Maltesers would make a come back.

What were White Maltesers?

White Chocolate Maltesers were the white-chocolate version of Maltesers.

The key difference between them and the original was that, instead of being covered in milk chocolate, they were covered in a delicious white chocolate coating.

Maltesers are round balls of malted milk covered in chocolate.

They were launched in 1937 after being created by American Forrest Mars Sr.

Maltesers were first released in the UK and were originally aimed at “dieting women” as a “lighter” way to enjoy chocolate.

They have since become popular across Europe and in Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

Why and when were White Maltesers discontinued?

White Maltesers were discontinued in 2014.

They were pulled from shelves 11 years after they first launched in 2003.

White Maltesers were originally launched as a seasonal product but became so popular that they began being sold all year round.

It has been reported that they were discontinued due low sales but many chocolate lovers were devastated to see the end of their run.

In 2017 a petition was started to bring the sweet treat back.

The petition’s creator had hoped to garner 2,500 signatures of support but as of March 2024 only 1,637 had signed the campaign.

What is similar to White Maltesers?

While White Maltesers may no longer be available there are still plenty of Maltesers products that shoppers can get their hands on.

The original Maltesers are available in a variety of sizes, including fun-size and sharing pouches.

There are also Maltesers Truffles which feature a truffle and Maltesers filling covered in a smooth milk chocolate coating.

They come individually wrapped and are sold in gift boxes.

In 2022 Mars launched a dark chocolate version of Maltesers.

Another popular variation of the original Maltesers is the Maltesers Bunnies.

They come individually wrapped or are sold as smaller versions in the Mini Bunnies Bags.

If it’s the white chocolate part of the White Maltesers that you’re craving then there are plenty of other ways to get your fix.

In 2019 Mars announced that they were releasing a white chocolate version of the Maltesers Truffles.

They appear to still be available as of March 2024 but it looks like they are very popular as many retailers were sold out at the time of writing.

Other options that white chocolate lovers may enjoy include Milkybar goodies and white chocolate versions of popular treats like Toblerone and Kit Kat Chunky.

Poundland also sells its own knock-off version of White Maltesers called White Chocolate Malt Balls.
