Why Percy Tau to Kaizer Chiefs makes absolutely no sense whatsoever

Percy Tau is leaving Al Ahly but a move to Kaizer Chiefs is a pipe dream for Amakhosi fans. Here’s why it just won’t happen.

Percy Tau’s glittering Al Ahly chapter is about to be closed

According to SoccerLaduma, Percy Tau won’t stay at Al Ahly beyond the end of the current campaign. Egyptian outfit Cairo24 are reporting that the 30-year-old Bafana star won’t extend his contract which expires at the end of the 2024-2025 campaign. This, therefore, is his final season with the Caf Champions League holders. This is down to his advancing age and unsustainable wage demands.

Serial winner, but is a troublesome character in the dressing room?

Despite rumours that Percy Tau’s relationship with the Al Ahly manager Marcel Kohler has broken down, he’s played a pivotal role in their recent dominance and silverware haul. Tau has won 10 major trophies with the club since joining from Brighton in 2021.

Prohibitive salary demands

As things stand, Percy Tau reportedly pocketed R23.2m in the first year of his new deal with Egyptian giants Al Ahly. Monthly, that’s roughly R1.93m a month. The annual figure could rise to R31m in the third year. That’s R2 million a month, at the lower end. For context, the now-released Keagan Dolly was bagging R1.4m a month. It’s unlikely he’ll be happy to take a considerable pay cut.

Tau hasn’t played well for a while in a Bafana jersey, is he past his best?

Sure, he’s been collecting trophies like stamps with Al Ahly but Percy Tau has failed to deliver for South Africa on the grandest stages. Bafana made it to the Afcon semi-finals but Tau had a tournament to forget on a personal level. With all due respect, if Chiefs need a transformative player, he needs to be somebody rocking it for his country.

Sections of Kaizer Chiefs fans don’t want Percy Tau anyway

TheTau is now with Egyptian giants Al Ahly, a club with which he has won eight trophies, including the most coveted CAF Champions League. The Lion of Judah will be 30 in May, which begs the question, can Kaizer Chiefs still squeeze some value out of the left-footer?

One fan on The South African called Tau ‘just another Dolly’ while Shad1961 said this:

“His tank is empty, he’s got nothing to offer Chiefs. He’s nothing but a liability to Chiefs. We have a lot of exciting and hungry youngsters, utilise them.

Do you think Tau has anything to offer Chiefs at his age or has his ship sailed?
